Moscow transport

The product:

This work was created as part of Hackhaton's Digital Breakthrough.

We have created a solution for the "Moscow Transport" application that allows users to estimate the congestion of ground public transport, subway platforms and parking lots.

Target audience:

People 20-30 year olds.

Project duration:

October 22-24, 2021 (48 hours).

The problem:

Users of the Moscow Transport app are not aware of the ability to view congestion on land transport, subway stations, parking lots, the ability to compare the congestion of neighboring or selected objects to select the least congested.

The goal:

Creation of new interfaces for user interaction with the application.

  • New solutions for viewing the workload of different modes of transport.
  • Clear load display.
  • Gamification.

User research: pain points

Representatives of the "Moscow Transport" application identified the tasks that the user needs to perform:

Load display

Load Display Users cannot find load information.

Load estimation

Users do not have the ability to self-assess the load of ground transportation, subway platform and parking lots.

disinterest

Get users interested in evaluating loads.

persona

Max is a 26-year-old computer programmer who takes public transportation to work every day. He constantly uses the "Moscow Transport" app to find out when the right bus arrives. Maxim knows how to see the traffic load in the app, but he doesn't use this function, because to see the load of a particular bus, you have to find it on the map.

Goals

  • Wants to be able to build a route more efficiently.
  • Wants to be able to conveniently get information on workload.

Frustrations

  • Does not have the ability to effectively build a route.

Mockups

We have come up with several solutions to estimate the user's workload. We also implemented reminders to wear a mask and maintain social distance in the solutions, according to the epidemiology of covid-19.

Traffic load display

We used the underlining of land modes of transport to show congestion. Pink indicates high congestion, blue indicates low congestion. We used these colors to prevent the user from confusing congestion with traffic jams. They are also complementary colors to the existing interface. The color conventions can be viewed on the tooltip.

estimation of congestion in surface transport

We used an interactive scale with a passenger to assess congestion on ground transportation. After selecting a route and starting, the user can put the person into one of the states: sitting, standing, and standing in a crowd.

Metro platform congestion estimation

We used an interactive distance scale to estimate the congestion on the subway platform. The user can move the smiley on the scale from 1.5 meters to 0 meters .  0 meters indicates a high platform congestion.  We determined that this solution is relevant for the pandemic period.

Evaluation of parking congestion

To assess parking congestion, you have come up with a system of measuring according to the time it takes to find a parking space. We have reflected this solution in the form of an interactive scale with a smiley face, where the user can choose the time to find a parking space. If the user didn't find a spot, they will be offered parking lots nearby.

High-fidelity prototype

The presentation of the final prototype met the needs of users and representatives of Moscow transport.

Takeaways

Impact:

We tried to solve the problems identified by Moscow Transport. We reflected the congestion of ground transport, developed solutions to assess congestion by users. Representatives of Moscow Transport liked our solution and we won 1st place in the competition.

What we learned:

We met a real challenge from the company Moscow Transport. We learned that incorporating into an existing visual design is a very important part of design. We focused on motivating the user by creating interactive, attractive graphics.
